Bangkok to Kathmandu flight guide
Multiple airlines fly nonstop from Bangkok to Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu: Nepal Airlines and Thai Airways International from Suvarnabhumi (BKK), and Thai AirAsia from Don Mueang (DMK). The 2,229 km flight takes about 3 hours 15 minutes. It suits trekkers and temple visitors heading to Nepal, and travellers pairing the Himalaya with a Thai beach break.
Nepal Airlines and Thai Airways are full-service, so a checked bag and a meal are included. Thai AirAsia charges for hold luggage, food and seat choice on top of the fare. Trekking gear is heavy: if you are carrying boots, a sleeping bag and poles, price the bag in before comparing, or fly a full-service carrier.
For Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link runs from Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes. Departures may use the SAT-1 satellite concourse, 28 gates reached through a tunnel of about one kilometre by an automated train; the ride takes about three minutes with the wait.
For Don Mueang, the A1 airport bus starts at Mo Chit 2 and calls at BTS Chatuchak, and the A2 starts at Victory Monument; both cost 30 baht. The SRT Red Line serves the airport from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal.
Tribhuvan International Airport lies about 5.6 km east of central Kathmandu, and Thamel is only about 6 km away. Taxis from the arrivals forecourt take 20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic; agree the fare first or book a hotel pickup.
The airport has a single runway, 02/20, about 3,050 m long, shared by international jets and the small aircraft that fly to Lukla, Pokhara and the mountain strips. Its apron has nine stands for medium and wide-body international aircraft and 17 for small domestic aircraft. With one runway, delays build quickly when weather closes in, so leave a spare day before any domestic flight to the trekking regions.
Nepal's entry rules and fees vary by nationality and are set by the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu. Confirm the current visa options on its website or on our Nepal visa page before you fly, and carry passport photos and cash in case you need to pay on arrival.
Biman, US-Bangla and Thai Airways land at Suvarnabhumi (see our Dhaka to Bangkok flights page), the same airport as the Nepal Airlines and Thai Airways departures to Kathmandu. A Don Mueang flight means crossing the city and checking in again, so leave at least four hours. Dhaka also has its own flights to Kathmandu: see Dhaka to Kathmandu flights.

Getting there
From Suvarnabhumi, a few airlines fly the route; from Don Mueang, Bangkok's low-cost airport, it is Thai AirAsia. Schedules change by season, so check the flights for your dates in the search above.
About 3 hours 15 minutes in the air. The two airports are 2,229 km apart in a straight line; actual times vary a little by airline, aircraft and wind.
Both. Rival airlines use Suvarnabhumi (BKK); Thai AirAsia uses Don Mueang (DMK). The airports are on opposite sides of the city, so check the code on your ticket.
Tribhuvan International Airport is only about 6 km from Thamel. Taxis from the arrivals forecourt take 20 to 40 minutes depending on traffic; agree the fare first or use a hotel pickup.
Yes, Kathmandu also has its own flights from Dhaka; see Dhaka to Kathmandu flights. Flying via Bangkok makes sense when you want a stopover in Thailand on the way.
Tribhuvan sits in a valley and handles heavy traffic on a single runway, and morning haze or fog in winter can slow arrivals. Leave slack in any onward plans.
Tribhuvan International Airport has one runway, 02/20, about 3,050 m long. International jets and domestic flights share it, so weather or a disabled aircraft can delay everything at once.
General
The clock moves one hour and 15 minutes back from Thai time (Thailand is UTC+7). Neither side uses daylight saving, so the gap stays the same all year.
Yes. Fly Dhaka to Bangkok on Biman, US-Bangla or Thai Airways, all of which land at Suvarnabhumi, then take one of the Kathmandu flights. Booking both legs on one Thai Airways ticket, where available, keeps you airside with your bag checked through. Two separate tickets mean clearing Thai immigration, which needs a Thai visa.
What's included
It depends on the airline. Thai AirAsia is a low-cost carrier whose basic fares include only a cabin bag, so add checked baggage when you book. The full-service airlines normally include a checked bag; the allowance is shown on your booking.
Visa & documents
Visa options and fees depend on your nationality and are set by Nepal's Department of Immigration. Check its website or our Nepal visa page shortly before travel, and carry passport photos and cash in case you pay on arrival.
Stay & facilities
On the full-service airlines, request a Muslim (halal) meal when you book or at least 24 hours before departure through the airline's manage-booking page. On Thai AirAsia, meals are bought online or on board; check the menu for halal options.
