Bangkok to Chennai flight guide
Various airlines fly nonstop from Bangkok to Chennai International Airport (MAA) in Tamil Nadu: IndiGo and Thai Airways International from Suvarnabhumi (BKK), and Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air from Don Mueang (DMK). The 2,227 km flight takes about 3 hours 15 minutes. Chennai is a major centre for medical treatment, manufacturing and IT, and the route carries patients, business travellers and holidaymakers.
Thai Airways International is the only full-service airline on the route and includes a checked bag and a meal. IndiGo, Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air are low-cost carriers and charge for checked baggage. Patients travelling with medical records and extra luggage often find the full-service fare simpler.
Suvarnabhumi lies about 25 km east of the centre and is reached on the Airport Rail Link from Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes. Don Mueang, in the north, is on the SRT Dark Red Line and is served by buses A1 to A4 for 30 to 50 baht. The airports are far apart, so check the code on your ticket.
Chennai International Airport is at Tirusulam, about 21 km south-west of the city centre; the old terminal at Meenambakkam is now the cargo complex. International flights use the new integrated Terminal 2, which began operating on 7 July 2023. The airport handled more than 22 million passengers in 2024–25.
Chennai Metro's Blue Line has a station at the airport, and Tirusulam station on the suburban railway's South Line is close by. App cabs and prepaid taxis run from arrivals to the hospitals and hotels in the city.
Most foreign nationals need an e-Visa or a regular Indian visa issued before departure. Medical visas have their own category, so patients should apply under the right one. Check the Government of India's official visa portal for your passport.
Biman, US-Bangla and Thai Airways fly Dhaka to Suvarnabhumi (see Dhaka to Bangkok flights), where the IndiGo and Thai Airways flights to Chennai also leave. A Don Mueang connection needs at least four hours. Dhaka also has its own flights: see Dhaka to Chennai flights.
India is 1 hour 30 minutes behind Thailand all year.

Yes, Chennai also has its own flights from Dhaka; see Dhaka to Chennai flights. Flying via Bangkok makes sense when you want a stopover in Thailand on the way.

General
The clock moves one hour and 30 minutes back from Thai time (Thailand is UTC+7). Neither side uses daylight saving, so the gap stays the same all year.
Yes. Fly Dhaka to Bangkok on Biman, US-Bangla or Thai Airways, all of which land at Suvarnabhumi, then take one of the Chennai flights. Booking both legs on one Thai Airways ticket, where available, keeps you airside with your bag checked through. Two separate tickets mean clearing Thai immigration, which needs a Thai visa.
Yes, Chennai and Dhaka are linked by air; our Chennai to Dhaka flights page lists the airlines on the route.
What's included
It depends on the airline. IndiGo, Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air are low-cost carriers whose basic fares include only a cabin bag, so add checked baggage when you book. The full-service airlines normally include a checked bag; the allowance is shown on your booking.
Visa & documents
Most foreign nationals do. Depending on nationality and purpose, that means an e-Visa or a regular visa issued before departure, and a passport valid for at least six months. Check the categories open to your passport on the Government of India's official visa portal.
Stay & facilities
On the full-service airlines, request a Muslim (halal) meal when you book or at least 24 hours before departure through the airline's manage-booking page. On IndiGo, Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air, meals are bought online or on board; check the menu for halal options.
