Bangkok to Vientiane flight guide
Lao Airlines and Thai Airways International fly nonstop from Suvarnabhumi (BKK), and Thai AirAsia from Don Mueang (DMK), to Wattay International Airport (VTE) in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The 516 km flight takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. The route suits government and business travellers, aid workers and visitors starting a trip through Laos.
Lao Airlines, the national carrier with its hub at Wattay, and Thai Airways International include a checked bag. Thai AirAsia prices the seat alone and charges for bags and meals. On a flight barely over an hour, the bag fee is the main difference in price.
Suvarnabhumi lies about 25 km east of the centre and is on the Airport Rail Link from Phaya Thai. Don Mueang, in the north, is on the SRT Dark Red Line and bus routes A1 to A4. Check your ticket for the airport code.
Wattay is about 3 km from central Vientiane, in Sikhottabong district, so the riverside hotels are a short taxi ride away. The international terminal was renovated in 2005 and expanded in a project between 2015 and 2018, which also built a new domestic terminal. Wattay is a hub for Lao Airlines, Lao Skyway and Lanexang Airways International, useful for domestic flights onward within Laos.
Vientiane is also the southern end of the Laos–China railway, which runs north to Luang Prabang and on towards China.
Laos's visa rules depend on nationality. Check the official Laos e-visa site or a Lao embassy before booking.
Biman, US-Bangla and Thai Airways land at Suvarnabhumi from Dhaka (see Dhaka to Bangkok flights), the same airport as the Lao Airlines and Thai Airways flights to Vientiane. The Don Mueang flight means crossing Bangkok and checking in again, so leave at least four hours.
There is no time difference: both run on UTC+7 all year.

General
There is no time difference: both run on UTC+7 all year.
Yes. Fly Dhaka to Bangkok on Biman, US-Bangla or Thai Airways, all of which land at Suvarnabhumi, then take one of the Vientiane flights. Booking both legs on one Thai Airways ticket, where available, keeps you airside with your bag checked through. Two separate tickets mean clearing Thai immigration, which needs a Thai visa.
That depends on your nationality. Check the official Laos e-visa site or a Lao embassy for the current requirements before booking.
What's included
It depends on the airline. Thai AirAsia is a low-cost carrier whose basic fares include only a cabin bag, so add checked baggage when you book. The full-service airlines normally include a checked bag; the allowance is shown on your booking.
Stay & facilities
On the full-service airlines, request a Muslim (halal) meal when you book or at least 24 hours before departure through the airline's manage-booking page. On Thai AirAsia, meals are bought online or on board; check the menu for halal options.
