Bangkok to Kunming flight guide
China Eastern Airlines, Thai Airways International and Thai AirAsia fly nonstop from Bangkok to Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG), the main airport of Yunnan province in south-west China. The 1,290 km flight takes about 2 hours 5 minutes. Kunming is known as the "spring city" for its mild climate, and travellers use it as a base for Dali, Lijiang and the rest of Yunnan.
China Eastern Airlines, which runs its south-western hub at Kunming, and Thai Airways International fly from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and include a checked bag. Thai AirAsia flies from Don Mueang (DMK), Bangkok's low-cost airport, and charges for checked baggage. Kunming is also a hub for several Chinese carriers, including Kunming Airlines, Lucky Air and Sichuan Airlines, which helps with onward domestic flights.
Suvarnabhumi lies about 25 km east of the city and is reached on the Airport Rail Link from Phaya Thai in about 27 minutes. Don Mueang is in the north, on the SRT Dark Red Line, with city buses A1 and A2 to Chatuchak and Victory Monument for 30 baht. The airports are on opposite sides of Bangkok, so check the code on your ticket.
Changshui opened on 28 June 2012 and replaced the old Wujiaba airport. It stands at 2,103 m above sea level, about 24.5 km north-east of the city centre, and handled 49.7 million passengers in 2025. Metro Line 6 has a station beneath Terminal 1, at level B2, and runs into the city; taxis queue at arrivals.
The altitude matters. The city itself sits at around 1,900 m, so some visitors feel short of breath or tired on the first day. Take it easy and drink plenty of water before heading higher into Yunnan.
Chinese entry rules depend on your passport and change from time to time. Confirm yours with the Chinese embassy or the official visa site before booking.
Biman, US-Bangla and Thai Airways fly Dhaka to Suvarnabhumi (see Dhaka to Bangkok flights), where the China Eastern and Thai Airways flights to Kunming also leave. A Don Mueang connection means crossing the city and checking in again, so leave at least four hours. Dhaka also has its own flights: see Dhaka to Kunming flights.
China is one hour ahead of Thailand all year, as neither country changes its clocks.

General
The clock moves one hour forward from Thai time (Thailand is UTC+7). Neither side uses daylight saving, so the gap stays the same all year.
That depends on your nationality, and the rules change from time to time. Confirm with the Chinese embassy or the official visa site before you book.
Yes. Fly Dhaka to Bangkok on Biman, US-Bangla or Thai Airways, all of which land at Suvarnabhumi, then take one of the Kunming flights. Booking both legs on one Thai Airways ticket, where available, keeps you airside with your bag checked through. Two separate tickets mean clearing Thai immigration, which needs a Thai visa.
At around 1,900 m above sea level, Kunming has mild weather all year, rarely hot and rarely freezing.
China Eastern has linked Kunming and Dhaka; see our Kunming to Dhaka flights page for the current service.
What's included
It depends on the airline. Thai AirAsia is a low-cost carrier whose basic fares include only a cabin bag, so add checked baggage when you book. The full-service airlines normally include a checked bag; the allowance is shown on your booking.
Stay & facilities
On the full-service airlines, request a Muslim (halal) meal when you book or at least 24 hours before departure through the airline's manage-booking page. On Thai AirAsia, meals are bought online or on board; check the menu for halal options.
