Flying from Bangkok to Shanghai

In short

Multiple airlines fly nonstop from Bangkok to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), the main international gateway to China's largest business city. Six leave from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and two, Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air, from Don Mueang (DMK). The 2,896 km flight takes about 4 hours 5 minutes. Business travellers, tourists and people connecting to North America or northern China all use the route.

Shanghai's home airlines and the low-cost choice

China Eastern Airlines and its sister Shanghai Airlines run their main hub at Pudong, and Juneyao Air and Spring Airlines are also based there. Thai Airways International and Thai VietJet Air complete the list from Suvarnabhumi, and Air China resumes flights on 26 October 2026. Spring Airlines, Thai VietJet Air, Thai AirAsia and Thai Lion Air price the seat alone, with bags and meals as extras, while the full-service airlines include them.

Which Bangkok airport your ticket names

Suvarnabhumi is about 25 km east of the centre, on the Airport Rail Link from Phaya Thai. Don Mueang, in the north, is served by the SRT Dark Red Line and by buses A1 to A4. Check which airport your ticket names, because the two are far apart and a taxi between them can take an hour or more.

Pudong terminals and the south satellite

Pudong opened on 16 September 1999 about 30 km east of the city centre, and it handled almost 85 million passengers in 2025. Flights use Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, with a south satellite concourse, opened in September 2019, linked to both by an underground people mover. Allow extra walking and train time if your gate is there.

The Maglev train reaches Longyang Road in about eight minutes, where you change to the metro. Metro Line 2 also serves both terminals and runs all the way across the city to Hongqiao airport and railway station.

Chinese visa rules

China's entry rules depend on nationality and change from time to time. Confirm yours with the Chinese embassy or the official visa site before booking.

Connecting from Dhaka at Suvarnabhumi

Biman, US-Bangla and Thai Airways land at Suvarnabhumi from Dhaka (see Dhaka to Bangkok flights), and six of the Shanghai airlines leave from the same airport. A Don Mueang flight means crossing Bangkok and checking in again, so leave at least four hours.

Shanghai is one hour ahead of Bangkok all year.
